While competition can bring out the best in us, it also brings out the worst in us. For instance, it results in our overconsumption and exploitative behaviors toward the environment and other humans. Who we are, our "self", is almost entirely defined, maintained and lost in the competitive social groups we chose to belong to. As described in this book, the best way to sustain the self is to ground our individuality in the body. An individual in a healthy balance between their "self" in their body and their group is also less likely to be exploitative of others and the environment. So you get your self and save the planet too!

Basically, the life of the Wicked Witch of the West, who just might not be so "wicked" anymore.

Now a broadway musical with an awesome soundtrack.

And the ending sucked.

I was finally happy, however, when this one guy by the name of Zane died.

He totally stole the spotlight away from David.

Good book, didn't like the ending.

And I didn't like Tally at all in this.

But still a good book.

I progressivly came to dislike Tally; she always seemed so shallow, now more than ever. Though I guess it can't be helped if you're naturally shallow, and then people play with your brain, making you more so.

Zane, wow, I was just waiting for him to die. No such luck. I wanted to hear more about David, he was my favorite.

No such luck. They finally mention him, and Tally completely blows him off.

Still a good book, however.

But it turned out to be much, much better than I expected.

Uglies brought up some really good points in relation to an ordinary teenager's life, issues about the environment, about friends, about society today and our obsession with looks and materialistic things, and about how we need to repress the urges to become what society wants us to be and to be ourselves and help to change the world.

After reading Uglies, I had high hopes for the next books. But by far, Uglies was the best.
